In frasi che iniziano con if, were spesso corrisponde al congiuntivo imperfetto italiano: If I were 30 years younger, I would emigrate, se fossi 30 anni più giovane, emigrerei; If I were a king, I'd give everyone 1 million pounds, se fossi un re, darei un milione di sterline a testa.
